Europe Struggles with Freezing Temperatures and Energy Crisis

Europe is grappling with freezing temperatures and rising gas prices after Ukraine halted Russian gas transit on 1 January, following the expiration of a five-year transport agreement.

With temperatures in cities like London and Berlin dropping below freezing and snowfall in Belgium, heating demand has surged, further straining supplies and pushing costs higher.

"My parents tell me to sometimes close my heating because it's too pricey," said a student, reflecting widespread concerns over affordability.

Despite efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas by importing U.S. liquefied natural gas, analysts highlight that the EU remains dependent on cheaper Russian supplies.

To address the crisis, Austria’s Mineral Oil Administration has committed to supplying Germany with gas from Romania's Neptun Deep project by 2027, marking a step towards diversifying Europe’s energy sources.
