Russia deploys nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile

Russia’s Defence Ministry has deployed a nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile system in Belarus.

This development bolsters Moscow’s ability to deliver missiles across Europe in the event of a war.

It is thought that the missiles and their mobile launchers are being stationed at a former airbase in eastern Belarus.

In a video released by the Russian Defence Ministry, a senior officer was shown telling troops in a forest that the system has officially entered active service.

The announcement follows a statement Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made earlier this month, stating that the Oreshnik arrived in the country and that up to 10 missiles will be stationed.

The Belarusian Defence Ministry says the missile has a range of up to 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles).

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said that the Oreshnik missile can’t be intercepted and that several of them used in a strike could be as devastating as a nuclear attack.
