Britain’s King Charles III welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Wednesday, marking the beginning of his three-day state visit to the United Kingdom. The visit, the first by a German President to the UK in 27 years, comes as the two countries continue to strengthen ties post-Brexit.
The British monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, greeted President Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, in Windsor on 3 December. The group participated in a formal carriage procession to Windsor Castle, accompanied by Prince William and Princess Kate, highlighting the significance of the visit.
President Steinmeier’s state visit follows a similar trip by King Charles to Germany in September 2023, marking his first official overseas visit after ascending to the throne.
During the visit, Steinmeier is set to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street before attending a formal state banquet at Windsor Castle later in the evening.
As part of the visit, President Steinmeier will also address British lawmakers in Parliament and meet with German soccer players currently playing in the Premier League in Britain, further cementing the cultural and sporting connections between the two nations.
This historic visit underscores the growing cooperation between the UK and Germany, with both countries keen to strengthen diplomatic, trade, and cultural ties following Britain’s departure from the European Union.
