Authorities in Senegal have launched urgent measures to prevent a potential oil spill after water entered the engine room of the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Mersin off the coast of Dakar.

The port authority reported that the incident occurred overnight from 27 to 28 November, prompting the vessel to issue a distress signal.

The tanker is owned by Turkey’s Mersin Shipping and managed by Besiktas Shipping. Senegal’s navy and maritime authority responded swiftly, deploying tugboats and specialised teams to address the situation.

Officials did not provide further details about the incident, but confirmed that all crew members were safely rescued and no injuries were reported.
