magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Susitna, northwest of Anchorage, Alaska, on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor occurred at 17:11 GMT at a depth of 69.4 kilometres (43 miles), roughly 12 km (7.5 miles) from Susitna, close to Anchorage, the state’s largest city.

The Alaska Department of Transportation said inspections are underway across highways, airports, bridges and tunnels to ensure the safety of the transport network. No immediate damage or travel disruptions have been reported.

Anchorage mayor Suzanne LaFrance confirmed that public infrastructure is being checked and no issues have been identified. There were no immediate reports of casualties, and the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center stated that a tsunami is not expected following the tremor.

Alaska’s largest recorded earthquake occurred on 27 March 1964, when a magnitude 9.2 tremor struck the Prince William Sound region, triggering a tsunami that killed 131 people.
