U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia on Friday to help reduce border tensions following a recent clash between the two countries.

A White House official said Trump also engaged with Malaysia to support efforts to end the violence, without naming the individuals he spoke to. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed he had spoken with Trump and stated that both Thailand and Cambodia had withdrawn forces from the border in line with the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement Framework.

“One civilian was killed and three others injured in a cross-border incident on Wednesday,” Anwar said on social media, noting the importance of handling disputes in an orderly manner to maintain regional stability.

Cambodia evacuated hundreds of residents from Prey Chan village following the incident, a provincial spokesman said.

The Royal Thai Army denied unprovoked firing by its forces and said Cambodian soldiers had fired into Thai territory. Thai troops reportedly returned fire using only the necessary force in line with rules of engagement to protect personnel and national sovereignty.
