The combined death toll from Typhoon Fung-wong and Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has reached 259, with 114 people still reported missing, state media says.
Last week, Typhoon Kalmaegi struck Cebu province and parts of the Central Visayas region, killing 232 people, leaving 112 missing, and injuring 523. Around 4.1 million people were affected, with severe damage to roads and infrastructure, and 20,510 of nearly 135,000 homes destroyed.
Typhoon Fung-wong, which hit the country on Friday night, claimed 27 lives, injured 36 people, and left two missing. The storm affected over 4.4 million people across 15 regions, including Central Luzon, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Western Visayas.
More than 800,000 people have sought shelter in roughly 11,800 evacuation centres. The storm also damaged roads and bridges, with electricity and water supply still disrupted in many towns and cities. According to the Education Department, nearly 3,000 schools were damaged, with 1,238 completely destroyed.
Typhoon Fung-wong, locally known as Typhoon Uwan, left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday morning and is now moving towards Taiwan. Although weakening, it may still bring heavy rainfall to central and southern parts of the island.
