At least eight people were killed and several others injured in a car explosion near the Red Fort in New Delhi on Monday. The explosion occurred near one of the gates of the Red Fort metro station, a busy area adjacent to the historic fort, triggering a large fire that damaged multiple parked vehicles.
New Delhi police and fire services quickly responded to the scene, with fire engines arriving shortly after the blast. The cause of the explosion is still unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the source of the blast.
Sanjay Tyagi, a spokesman for the city's police force, confirmed the death toll, saying: "At least 8 people were killed, and several others were injured. We are investigating the cause of the blast." Local media reports showed images of damaged vehicles and a police cordon around the area as investigators worked to gather evidence.
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a former imperial palace, is one of New Delhi’s most prominent tourist attractions. The explosion occurred in the vicinity of the Red Fort, which is a well-known landmark and a busy area, often frequented by both locals and tourists.
Eyewitness Account
A witness living near the site described hearing a loud “window-shattering sound” followed by the sight of flames engulfing several vehicles. The explosion caused a significant disturbance, with thick smoke rising from the area and emergency responders rushing to the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion, but given the location near a major tourist attraction and metro station, the blast has raised security concerns. Investigators are working to determine whether it was an act of terrorism, an accident, or something else.
New Delhi has experienced security challenges in recent years, and authorities are under increasing pressure to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists in the city.
As of now, the Red Fort and its surrounding areas have been cordoned off, and the investigation into the tragic incident continues.
