Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed a new commander for drone air defences on Friday, recognising the critical role these defences play in countering the threat of Russian drones.

According to the president’s website, Yuri Cherevashenko has extensive experience in establishing Ukraine’s first mobile air defence brigades and has contributed to the development of interceptor drones. These drones are seen as a crucial element in defending against Russia's ongoing drone attacks in the nearly 3.5-year-long war.

Zelenskyy outlined several key tasks for the new commander, including further development of interceptor drones and introducing new measures to enhance air defences.

Ukraine's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, mentioned in September that Ukraine is focused on improving interceptor drone performance to establish a "layered system" of defence against Russian drone assaults.
