U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Tuesday during a press briefing.
Since taking power from Bashar al-Assad last December, al-Sharaa has undertaken several foreign visits as his transitional government works to restore Syria’s relationships with global powers that had distanced themselves from Damascus during Assad's rule.
Trump has aimed to foster positive relations with al-Sharaa. In June, he lifted most U.S. sanctions on Syria, and the president met with the Syrian leader during a visit to Saudi Arabia last May.
"When the president was in the Middle East, he made the historic decision to lift sanctions on Syria to give them a genuine opportunity for peace, and I believe the administration has seen good progress on that front under their new leadership," Leavitt said.
