Carter, a Democrat, served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, defeating Republican incumbent Gerald Ford in 1976. His presidency was marked by significant achievements, including the 1978 Camp David Accords that brokered peace between Israel and Egypt. However, it was also overshadowed by the Iran hostage crisis, where 52 American diplomats were held captive for 444 days. A military rescue mission in 1980 ended in failure, costing the lives of eight U.S. servicemen.
Despite a difficult presidency and losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan in a landslide, Carter went on to earn widespread respect for his humanitarian efforts. He founded the Carter Center, advancing democracy, human rights, and global health. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his "untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter returned to his hometown after leaving the White House, where he lived a modest life. He became known for his dedication to teaching Sunday school and his work with Habitat for Humanity, constructing homes for those in need alongside his wife of over 70 years, Rosalynn Carter.
Carter faced several health challenges in his later years, including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain. In February 2024, he opted for hospice care to spend his remaining time at home with family.
Reflecting on his life in 2015, Carter stated, "I've had a wonderful life. I've had thousands of friends. And I've had an exciting and adventurous and gratifying existence."
From peanut farmer to president to global humanitarian, Carter's legacy endures as a testament to perseverance, humility, and service to humanity.
