More than 62,000 people have fled Al-Fashir in Sudan’s North Darfur within four days of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seizing the city, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The agency said its field teams estimated that 62,263 people escaped Al-Fashir and nearby villages between 26 and 29 October. On 29 October alone, around 26,000 people fled due to worsening insecurity.

The Sudan Doctors Network also reported that 4,500 people have fled the city of Bara in North Kordofan state amid what it described as RSF “violations” against civilians. The group said many displaced families are moving towards El-Obeid, facing harsh conditions and severe shortages of food, water and shelter.

Al-Fashir fell under RSF control on Sunday after months of siege. Rights groups accuse the paramilitary force of carrying out mass killings, detentions and attacks on hospitals.

Sudan has been gripped by civil war since April 2023, pitting the army against the RSF and displacing millions across the country.
