Argentina has boosted security along its border with Brazil following a large-scale police operation against the Comando Vermelho gang in Rio de Janeiro, which has reportedly left more than 100 people dead since it began on Tuesday.

National Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said the government is imposing a maximum border alert to monitor the movement of anyone coming from conflict areas in Rio. She clarified that no additional troops would be deployed, but a comprehensive alert system will scrutinize all arrivals, regardless of criminal records.

The operation targeted two impoverished favelas in Rio and involved 2,500 police officers, aiming to curb the gang’s territorial expansion. Authorities confirmed 121 fatalities, including four police officers, though the Public Defender’s Office estimates over 130 deaths. Police arrested 113 suspects and took 10 teenagers into custody.

The crackdown also led to the seizure of 119 weapons, 14 explosive devices, and drugs. Argentine officials voiced concern that criminals could flee the violence, prompting the heightened border measures.
