Former Ivory Coast commerce minister Jean-Louis Billon conceded defeat on Sunday to incumbent President Alassane Ouattara in the country’s presidential election, as early tallies showed Ouattara with a commanding lead across multiple regions.

Billon, one of four opposition challengers, acknowledged in a statement that “the initial results place the incumbent President, Mr. Alassane Ouattara, in the lead, designating him the winner of this presidential election,” and offered his congratulations to the 83-year-old leader.

Ouattara, a former IMF deputy managing director, is seeking a fourth term and was widely considered the frontrunner in a race that proceeded without major disruptions.

Billon had attempted, unsuccessfully, to gain the endorsement of the PDCI opposition party, led by former Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam, who was ruled ineligible to run in Saturday’s vote in the world’s largest cocoa-producing nation.

The electoral commission is expected to release provisional results within five days.
