Israeli military says it conducted 'targeted strike' in central Gaza

Israeli forces conducted a "targeted strike" on an individual in central Gaza on Saturday, claiming the person was planning an attack on Israeli troops, according to the Israeli military.

Despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which has been in place since the Gaza conflict began over two years ago, both sides have accused each other of violations.

Israel stated that the target was a member of Islamic Jihad, though the Palestinian group has yet to comment on the claim.

Witnesses reported seeing a drone strike a car, which was then set on fire. Local medics confirmed that four people were injured, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities.

Additionally, witnesses said Israeli tanks shelled eastern areas of Gaza City, the largest urban area in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the shelling.

Several Israeli media outlets reported that, in a shift from its usual policy of barring foreign forces, Israel had allowed Egyptian officials into Gaza to assist in locating the bodies of hostages taken during the Hamas-led attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, which escalated the conflict.

As part of the ceasefire deal, Hamas has pledged to return all hostages it abducted, though the remains of 13 hostages are still in Gaza.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
