Trump to meet Xi in South Korea as part of Asia swing

U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week as part of a trip to Asia, the White House said on Thursday, confirming the meeting which had been called into question following an escalation in trade tensions.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump departs for Malaysia late on Friday night and will also visit Japan and South Korea, where he will meet Xi next Thursday after addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit.

Azerbaijan calls for global solidarity against landmine threat at UN

Azerbaijan has urged the international community to show stronger solidarity and support in tackling the global threat of landmines, as the country continues to face widespread contamination across more than 13 percent of its territory.

U.S. Bureau, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Tofiq Musayev, made the call during a session of the UN General Assembly’s 80th meeting held under the theme “The Secretary-General’s Humanitarian Disarmament and Mine Action Campaign.”

Speaking at the event, Musayev said that landmines, explosive remnants of war, and improvised devices continue to pose a deadly risk to civilians, military personnel, peacekeepers, and humanitarian workers in many conflict and post-conflict regions — including Azerbaijan.

Putin defiant after Trump sanctions Russian oil companies over Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin remained defiant on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies in an effort to pressure the Kremlin to end the war in Ukraine, a move that sent global oil prices soaring by 5%.

The sanctions prompted China’s state-owned oil majors to temporarily suspend Russian oil purchases, according to trade sources quoted by Reuters. Industry insiders also said refiners in India, the biggest buyer of Russian seaborne oil are preparing to sharply reduce their crude imports.

The measures target energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil, which together produce more than 5% of the world’s oil. The decision marks a dramatic reversal by Trump, who just last week said he and Putin would soon hold a summit in Budapest aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.

Trump says all trade talks with Canada are terminated

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday all trade talks with Canada were terminated following what he called a fraudulent advertisement in which former and late President Ronald Reagan spoke negatively about tariffs.

Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and autos earlier this year, prompting Ottawa to respond in kind. The two sides have been in talks for weeks on a potential deal for the steel and aluminum sectors.

Türkiye to buy from abroad until its own fighter jets ready

Türkiye plans to buy the necessary defence systems from NATO allies and other countries until its domestic fighter jet KAAN is ready for delivery, a Turkish Defence Ministry source said on Thursday.

On Wednesday that Ankara had proposed to its European allies and the United States ways it could swiftly procure advanced fighter jets amid talks to buy 40 Eurofighter Typhoons as well as U.S. F-16s and F-35s, and as President Tayyip Erdogan holds a regional tour to Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.

A person familiar with the matter said that under a deal it is nearing with Britain on the Typhoons, Türkiye would promptly receive 12 of them, albeit used, from previous buyers Qatar and Oman to meet its immediate needs.
