A passenger bus in northern India caught fire on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people, authorities said.
The bus, carrying between 35 and 50 passengers, had just left Jaisalmer en route to Jodhpur in Rajasthan state when smoke appeared from the rear, local lawmaker Mahant Pratap Puri told The Associated Press.
“Passengers didn’t get time to deboard the bus as the fire spread quickly,” Puri said.
Nineteen bodies were recovered at the scene, while one passenger later died en route to hospital. At least 15 others were critically injured and admitted for treatment.
The driver stopped the bus near a military station, but the flames rapidly consumed the vehicle. Puri noted that the new bus had only one door, making escape difficult for passengers at the rear, who were trapped as the fire spread.
