CIS Heads of State Council Summit opens in Dushanbe with focus on regional security and cooperation

Today, 10 October, the CIS Heads of State Council meeting is underway in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in a limited format attended by leaders from member states.

The agenda includes adopting crucial documents related to regional security, military cooperation through 2030, counterterrorism efforts for 2026–2028, border security, and collaboration on transnational crime and energy security.

Notably, the council is set to approve the creation of the "CIS+" format, a new platform intended to allow third countries and international organizations to engage with selected CIS activities.

Additionally, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is expected to receive observer status within the CIS during this session.​

Azerbaijan is actively involved in these developments, underscoring its intent to play a key role in regional stability and cooperation within the CIS framework.

The summit marks a significant moment for the CIS as it approaches its 35th anniversary next year, with forward-looking initiatives to strengthen its international standing and operational effectiveness.​

This meeting of the Heads of State Council thus serves as both a platform for reaffirming existing partnerships and exploring new avenues of cooperation in a complex geopolitical environment.​
