New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced today he is ending his bid for a second term, citing media speculation, lack of public campaign funds, and political pressure.
In a video posted on Sunday, Mayor Adams said that “constant media speculation” about his political future and the decision by the city’s Campaign Finance Board to withhold matching funds seriously hampered his ability to mount a “serious campaign.”
He highlighted some of his accomplishments, especially a drop in violent crime, but acknowledged that scandals, resignations among senior staff, and legal controversies had eroded public trust.
Adams, who had opted to run as an independent after skipping the Democratic primary, did not endorse another candidate. He warned against “insidious forces” aiming to “destroy the very system we built over generations.”
Because the withdrawal comes after ballot‐printing deadlines, his name will still appear in November’s election, even though he is no longer actively campaigning.
With Adams out, the contest effectively becomes a three‐way race among Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, and Curtis Sliwa.
