Argentine President Javier Milei on Wednesday reaffirmed his government’s new economic policy during a speech at the United Nations, stating that “the only way to achieve this is to do the opposite of what was done in the past.”

He emphasised that his country has chosen the most difficult path, but the prosperity and progress of the Argentine people can no longer be postponed.

Milei also reiterated Argentina’s sovereignty claims over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas, inviting the United Kingdom to resume bilateral negotiations. He further called for the immediate release of hostages held in Gaza.

Following remarks from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Argentine assets surged sharply. Bessent stated that the US is prepared to support the country with a $20 billion swap line. Argentina is set to hold legislative midterm elections on 26 October, with Milei’s right-wing party aiming to strengthen its minority position.
