Canada will provide C$60 million ($43.35 million) to support stability in Haiti, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

The funding includes C$40 million for the multinational security support mission in Haiti and C$20 million for a regional maritime security initiative, aimed at strengthening the capacity to tackle the growing threat of transnational organized crime in Haiti and the Caribbean, according to a statement from the Canadian foreign ministry.

Armed gangs have seized control of nearly all of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, in an ongoing conflict that has displaced around 1.3 million people, killed thousands, and triggered famine-level hunger.
