Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected negotiations with the United States over its nuclear program in a televised speech on Tuesday (September 23), saying such talks “would not serve Tehran’s interests and would prove a dead-end.”

In a recorded message, Khamenei also stated that Iran would not “surrender to pressure” on uranium enrichment and reaffirmed the country’s long-standing position that it does not need nuclear weapons and has no intention of producing them.

U.S. President Donald Trump, in his address to the U.N. General Assembly the same day, warned that Iran could never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Khamenei’s remarks come as Iran and European powers agreed to continue discussions on Tehran’s contested nuclear program, following a meeting aimed at reaching a last-minute deal to prevent the reimposition of U.N. sanctions, according to the Iranian foreign ministry.
