In an appearance on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show (September 21), Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy defended the government's decision to recognise a Palestinian state.

While he acknowledged that the move wouldn’t bring immediate change, he stressed that "a Palestinian state is a just cause."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer had stated in July that the UK would recognise Palestine unless Israel reached a ceasefire with Hamas, allowed more aid into Gaza, ruled out annexing the West Bank, and committed to a peace process leading to a "two-state solution" – a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Lammy told Kuenssberg that, since that announcement, the ceasefire had been broken and Israel had proceeded with a settlement plan, adding, "Now is the time to stand up for two states."
