In a landmark agreement during President Donald Trump's state visit, the UK and U.S. have unveiled a $42 billion "Tech Prosperity Deal," focusing on advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and civil nuclear energy.
The "Tech Prosperity Deal" represents a significant step in UK–US technological collaboration. This partnership aims to enhance innovation, economic growth, and energy security in both nations.
Artificial Intelligence (AI):
Microsoft leads with a £22 billion investment over four years, including the development of the UK's largest AI supercomputer in Loughton, equipped with 23,000 advanced AI chips. Nvidia has pledged to deploy 120,000 GPUs, forming Europe's largest AI cluster, while OpenAI and Nscale will collaborate on the "Stargate" project in northeast England. Google also commits £5 billion over two years for AI research and infrastructure, including a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.
Quantum Computing:
The UK and U.S. are advancing quantum computing capabilities, with initiatives such as the "Genesis" quantum computer developed by Oxford Quantum Circuits. This technology is integrated into New York’s first combined quantum-AI data center, serving sectors such as finance and healthcare.
Civil Nuclear Energy:
The deal includes commitments to build new nuclear power stations, including advanced modular reactors. This collaboration is expected to create up to 2,500 jobs in Teesside and contribute to the UK's energy security.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasised that this agreement marks a "generational step change" in the UK–U.S. relationship, aiming to deliver growth, security, and opportunity across the country.
