Large plumes of smoke were rising in Gaza on Tuesday (September 16) morning, as Israeli military confirm that it had begun "dismantling Hamas terrorist infrastructure in Gaza City".

"We have launched a significant operation in Gaza," Netanyahu said at the start of testimony in court in an ongoing corruption trial.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered the military last month to capture Gaza City, which he describes as a stronghold of Hamas.

Israeli forces have since been operating on the outskirts of the City for weeks, edging closer to the centre of the where an estimated 1 million Palestinians were sheltering last month.

"Gaza is burning," Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a post on X early on Tuesday.

"The IDF strikes with an iron fist at the terrorist infrastructure and IDF soldiers are fighting bravely to create the conditions for the release of the hostages and the defeat of Hamas."

Residents said bombardment of the city had been ramped up dramatically over the past two days, with heavier explosions that destroyed dozens of homes, and naval boats joining tanks and planes in the bombardment of the coast.
