Three teenagers are in critical condition after a shooting at a suburban Denver high school on Wednesday, authorities confirmed.

A shooting unfolded around midday at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado, about 48 km west of Denver, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Jacki Kelley said all those injured are believed to be students. They were taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, where they remain in critical condition. Hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan said the teens were either in the emergency room or undergoing surgery as of mid-afternoon, adding that no other victims are currently believed to be involved.

Authorities have not yet confirmed who the shooter was or whether more than one person may have been involved. The first reports of gunfire came in at around 12:24 p.m. local time.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers responded to the scene, with police carrying out room-by-room searches of the school. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also assisting in the investigation.

The situation remains active as authorities continue to secure the area.
