Hong Kong shut schools and many businesses closed on Monday (8 September) as severe Tropical Storm Tapah came within 170 km (106 miles) of the area with gale-force winds.

Damage appeared limited, with streets mostly calm and no reports of landslides or major flooding on Monday morning.

Most transportation, including ferries, buses, and trams was halted, while the city’s mass-transit railway operated on extended intervals.

Hong Kong’s Observatory confirmed that the Typhoon 8 signal, the city’s third-highest, would stay in effect.

Schools will remain closed all day, while businesses can reopen if the signal is lowered.

Winds near Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau Island reached 101 kph (63 mph), with gusts up to 151 kph (93.8 mph).
