U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he may visit Kazakhstan following an “excellent conversation” with the country’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Trump made the remarks while answering journalists’ questions on The White House lawn as he headed to the U.S. Open Tennis Championship final in New York.

“I can do that,” Trump said when asked about a potential visit. Speaking about Tokayev, he added: “I had an excellent conversation with him. Give him my regards – he is a great man.”

If confirmed, the trip would mark a historic first: despite more than 30 years of diplomatic relations, no sitting U.S. president has ever visited Kazakhstan.

Earlier this month, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy, Serik Zhumanqarin, stressed that strengthening trade and economic relations with the United States remains a key foreign policy priority. He noted that the country sees ample opportunity to expand trade with Washington.
