Muslims across Yemen marked the birthday of Prophet Mohammad on Thursday, September 4, in a widespread display of devotion and celebration.
Hundreds of thousands of worshippers gathered at approximately 70 locations across the country, waving green flags, chanting prayers, and participating in communal festivities. A member of the crowd, also a Houthi supporter, described the turnout as “very large,” adding that people had been arriving since early morning to celebrate the occasion and honour the Prophet’s life and teachings.
Prophet Mohammad, who was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in 570 AD, is celebrated worldwide during Mawlid, which falls on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar. This annual observance is a time for reflection, prayers, and commemorating the Prophet’s legacy. This year, the celebration in Yemen coincided with September 4, bringing together communities across the country in a unified expression of faith.
The events included recitations of the Quran, sermons, and public gatherings, highlighting the importance of Mawlid as a spiritual and cultural milestone for Muslims in Yemen. Despite ongoing challenges in the country, the celebration drew large crowds, reflecting the enduring significance of Prophet Mohammad’s birth in the hearts of the Yemeni people.
