White House trade adviser Peter Navarro warned on Monday (September 1) that the future of the United States rests with the Supreme Court as it prepares to rule on President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs.
Navarro described the case as “arguably the single most important economic case that has ever come before the Supreme Court,” telling reporters outside the White House that if a lower court’s decision is upheld, “President Trump has correctly said that will be the end of the United States.”
On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., ruled 7-4 that most of Trump’s tariffs were illegal, striking at the core of one of his main economic policy tools. The court, however, allowed the tariffs to remain in effect until October 14, giving the administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court. The ruling covered Trump’s so-called “reciprocal” tariffs introduced in April as part of a broader trade war, as well as additional tariffs imposed in February on China, Canada, and Mexico to counter fentanyl imports.
Navarro also commented on U.S. policy toward India, after Trump imposed tariffs on Indian exports in response to New Delhi’s increasing purchases of Russian crude oil. India has become the largest buyer of Russian seaborne oil, taking advantage of discounted prices after the U.S. and European allies imposed sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
