China urges Indonesia to ensure the safety of its citizens amid recent protests, while respecting Jakarta’s decision to cancel President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Beijing.

China has called on Indonesia to take effective steps to protect Chinese nationals in the country following recent demonstrations.

At a regular press briefing on Monday, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasised that Beijing understands and respects Jakarta’s choice to cancel President Prabowo Subianto’s scheduled trip to China, originally planned for the Victory Day parade on 3 September.

Instead, a representative of Prabowo will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and the military parade in Beijing.
