Second explosion hits bank in Peru as crime and extortion rise

A Mexican-owned bank branch on the outskirts of Peru’s capital, Lima, was damaged in a powerful explosion on Sunday, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

This marks the second attack on the bank in less than a week. On Friday, another branch of Compartamos Bank suffered an explosion that destroyed an ATM and partially damaged a nearby bridge.

Police and the bank are investigating both incidents, which officials say may be linked to a recent surge in extortion and attacks on businesses across the country. Reports show extortion cases rose 28% between January and July 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Compartamos Bank, owned by Mexican group Gentera, confirmed the damage and said it is cooperating with authorities. The bank serves over one million clients through more than 100 branches nationwide.

Authorities warned that such attacks have become increasingly common, targeting homes, public transport, schools, and offices, disrupting daily life and public safety.
