The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate was arrested last week in Pennsylvania in connection with the December 4 attack. On Thursday, he was brought to a federal court in Manhattan, where he was held without bail.
While Mangione was initially expected to be arraigned on state murder charges, the federal charges preempted those proceedings. Prosecutors stated that both cases will proceed on parallel tracks, with the state charges expected to go to trial first.
During the 15-minute court session, Mangione said little. Shackled at the ankles and dressed in formal attire, he sat silently as the magistrate judge explained his rights and the charges against him. He nodded in acknowledgment and occasionally leaned forward to the microphone to confirm his understanding.
The case has sparked significant concern in business circles and intensified criticism of the health insurance industry.
