On Friday, Canada is set to announce the removal of numerous retaliatory tariffs on American goods as a goodwill gesture to re-energise trade talks with Washington, a source told reporters.

The tariffs on U.S. autos, steel and aluminum will remain in place for now due to ongoing sensitivities. Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to make the announcement at a press conference.

The development boosted the Canadian dollar, which rose 0.5% to C$1.3837 per U.S. dollar (72.27 U.S. cents) by late morning.

Ottawa has been negotiating with Washington for months on a new economic and security framework, though the two sides remain far from reaching a deal.

Carney spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday in what his office described as a “productive” conversation, the first since June. His office did not comment further on Friday’s planned announcement.
