UN Security Council reaffirms Syria's territorial integrity, condemns interference

The United Nations Security Council reiterated its "strong commitment" to Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity while condemning interference in the country's transition.

"The Security Council ... reaffirms its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and calls on all states to respect these principles," the Council said in a statement.

Australia to recognise Palestinian state in September

Australia says it will recognise a Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday.

The decision, endorsed by the cabinet, is intended to accelerate progress toward a two-state solution.

Prime Minister Albanese said recognition comes with assurances from the Palestinian Authority that Hamas will have no role in any future state.

Azerbaijan says energy cooperation with Ukraine won't be derailed by Russian strikes

Azerbaijan's president on Sunday condemned Russian air strikes on Azerbaijani oil and gas facilities in Ukraine but said energy cooperation between the two countries would continue.

Ilham Aliyev spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy by phone.

"During the conversation, both sides condemned the deliberate airstrikes by Russia on an oil storage facility owned by Azerbaijan's SOCAR in Ukraine, as well as other Azerbaijani facilities and a gas compressor station transporting Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine," Aliyev's press service said in a statement.

Türkiye earthquake flattens buildings in north-east Balikesir province

One person has died in Türkiye after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the north-west province of Balikesir on Sunday evening.

An 81-year-old woman passed away shortly after she was pulled out from rubble in the town of Sindirgi, which was the epicentre of the quake, Türkiye's interior minister said.

Sixteen buildings collapsed as a result of the tremors, and 29 people had been injured, Ali Yerlikaya added.

Netanyahu defends Gaza plans as Israel is heavily criticised at UN Security Council

UN ambassadors have condemned Israel's plans to "take control" of Gaza City as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted it was the "best way" to end the war.

During a press conference, which Netanyahu said was intended to "puncture the lies", the Israeli leader said the planned offensive would move "fairly quickly" and would "free Gaza from Hamas".
