Trump says India halting Russian oil imports would be a ‘good step’

U.S. President Donald Trump said he heard that India has stopped buying oil from Russia, describing it as a “good step” — though he admitted the information is unconfirmed.

“That’s what I heard. I don’t know if that’s right or not, but that’s a good step. We’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey.

Trump has recently criticised India’s trade practices and its ties with Russia. On Wednesday, he announced a 25% tariff plus an additional penalty on Indian goods starting 1 August.

“India is our friend, but we’ve done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high — among the highest in the world,” he posted on Truth Social.

Trade between the U.S. and India reached $129 billion in 2024, with a U.S. trade deficit of $45.7 billion, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
