Syria will hold its first parliamentary elections under new interim authorities between September 15 and 20, amid ongoing sectarian violence in the south.

Syria announced it will hold parliamentary elections between September 15 and 20, marking the first vote under the country’s new interim authorities following the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime in December.

Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, chairman of the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections, said one third of the 210 parliamentary seats will be appointed by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, while the remainder will be elected by provincial electoral colleges. The vote follows a temporary constitution signed in March, which established a People’s Committee to serve as an interim parliament during a transition period expected to last years.

The election announcement comes amid rising tensions after sectarian violence erupted in Sweida province earlier this month.

The fragile postwar transition faces significant challenges as Syria moves toward political restructuring.
