Haitian police have seized more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine during a raid off the country’s northern coast that left three suspected traffickers dead, officials confirmed Tuesday.
The operation took place near Tortue Island on Sunday, where authorities say traffickers have long used coastal waters to transfer drugs.
According to Port-de-Paix prosecutor Jeir Pierre, police had been monitoring the area but lacked resources until recently, when a regional police chief secured a patrol boat.
When officers approached the suspected drug vessel and ordered those onboard to surrender, the suspects opened fire. Police returned fire, killing three men — two of whom jumped into the sea and later died, while a third died on shore. A fourth suspect from the Bahamas was wounded and arrested. One of the deceased was identified as Jamaican, police said.
No officers were injured in the clash.
