EU, China urged to show stronger climate leadership

European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera called on China and the EU to reaffirm their full commitment to the Paris Agreement during climate talks in Beijing.

Speaking on Monday alongside Chinese officials, Ribera emphasised that global climate efforts remain insufficient and that both powers must demonstrate leadership by accelerating action. “We must acknowledge the current pace is too slow,” she said, urging the “strongest possible” joint commitment.

Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang responded by confirming that China will unveil its 2035 carbon reduction target ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil later this year.

The dialogue comes as both sides face growing pressure to lead by example in the global transition to net-zero emissions.
