China has officially delivered its first AI-powered oceanographic research vessel, Tong Ji, enhancing the country’s marine science and engineering capabilities.

The 2,000-ton Tong Ji was handed over on Sunday to Shanghai’s Tongji University by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company, marking a major milestone in China’s maritime research innovation.

At 82 metres long and 15 metres wide, the vessel can accommodate 15 crew and 30 researchers, and has a range of 8,000 nautical miles. Despite its 2,000-ton classification, its advanced design gives it the operational capabilities of a 3,000-ton vessel.

Equipped with intelligent systems for autonomous navigation and energy-efficient route optimisation, Tong Ji also boasts integrated air, sea, and underwater communications. It features modular laboratories, allowing flexible support for research in marine geology, biology, chemistry, and atmospheric sciences.

This AI-driven ship is expected to significantly boost China's ocean exploration, environmental monitoring, and marine innovation.
