U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he expected Russian President Vladimir Putin to release more than 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners soon, after a trilateral meeting was set up with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump made the remarks at the start of a meeting with Zelenskyy and seven European leaders, where he forecast what he called “really positive moves” following the agreement on talks involving Washington, Moscow and Kyiv.

“I think you’ll see that President Putin really would like to do something also,” Trump said. He added that Russia’s leader was ready to act quickly on the issue of prisoners.

“I know there’s over 1,000 prisoners, and I know they’re going to release them. Maybe they’re going to release them very soon, like immediately, which I think is great,” he said.

The trilateral format, agreed during the discussions, aims to build momentum toward wider negotiations on the war. European leaders present said they hoped the move could be an early signal of progress.
