Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov has been shortlisted for the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament award at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his strike against DR Congo named among the competition’s 12 best goals. The nomination places the Uzbek forward alongside some of world football’s biggest stars.
Shomurodov scored during Uzbekistan’s 1-3 defeat to Democratic Republic of the Congo, producing what organisers described as a perfectly executed chip over the goalkeeper following a well-worked attacking move.
The goal became one of the standout moments of Uzbekistan’s debut FIFA World Cup campaign, earning widespread praise for its technique and composure.
The shortlist also features goals from several of the tournament’s top players.
Among them are Kylian Mbappé’s long-range strike against Senegal, Lionel Messi’s finish following an assist from Rodrigo De Paul against Algeria, Erling Haaland’s powerful effort from outside the penalty area against Brazil, Jude Bellingham’s goal that secured a bronze for England’s National Team and a goal by Ferran Torres that won the title of world champions for Spain.
The remaining nominees include Elijah Just of New Zealand, Wilson Isidor of Haiti, Kerim Alajbegović of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Daizen Maeda of Japan, Sidney Lopes Cabral of Cape Verde and Julián Álvarez of Argentina.
The winner of the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament award will be determined through an online public vote, which runs from 20 to 27 July.
Shomurodov has already enjoyed success in fan voting during this year’s tournament. Earlier, his chipped finish against DR Congo was voted the best goal of the group stage, receiving 36 per cent of the public vote in FIFA’s online poll.
The latest nomination offers another opportunity for Uzbekistan’s captain to earn global recognition following the national team’s historic first appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Hyundai Goal of the Tournament is an official FIFA award, sponsored by Hyundai and given to the player who scored the most outstanding goal.
