A 16-year-old attacked students and staff at a school in southern Brazil on Tuesday, killing a 9-year-old boy and injuring another child and a teacher, according to police.

The incident happened in Estação, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The teen, who was arrested shortly after, used a knife in the attack, authorities said. His identity has not been released.

Local media reported the suspect was undergoing psychological treatment and was known to staff. He reportedly entered the school saying he was dropping off a resume.

“The boy was stabbed several times in the chest and did not survive,” Estação Mayor Geverson Zimmermann told local radio.

Classes in the area have been suspended indefinitely. Governor Eduardo Leite said on X the attack would not be “normalized or forgotten,” and pledged tighter school safety measures.

School attacks in Brazil have become more frequent in recent years. In 2023, four children were killed in a similar attack at a daycare centre in neighbouring Santa Catarina.
