The United Nations has condemned recent Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, urging respect for Syria's sovereignty and calling for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stressed the need for a Syrian-led transition that includes all minorities to ensure their safety and participation in Syria's future.
"The transformation of Syria should be led by Syrians and must be inclusive," Dujarric said. "It should not be used by its neighbors to undermine the country's stability."
Geir Pedersen, the UN's Special Envoy for Syria, also condemned the Israeli airstrikes and urged for de-escalation, particularly to protect civilians and maintain international humanitarian law. He outlined the need for a political process that is inclusive of all Syrian groups, warning that failure to do so would risk reigniting conflict in the country.
He also cautioned that any actions by international actors that undermine Syria’s transformation could lead to further instability. "It is crucial that we do not see actions that destroy the possibility for this transformation," he added.
Although Pedersen has not engaged directly with Israeli authorities, he noted that UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights maintain regular contact with Israeli officials.
