The Dalai Lama, already the longest-lived head of Tibetan Buddhism, now says he hopes to live beyond 130, delighting followers during a prayer ceremony in Dharamshala.

Speaking ahead of his 90th birthday, the Dalai Lama expressed optimism about living for another four decades, revising his earlier life expectancy prediction of 110.

Addressing thousands of followers from around the world at a long-life prayer ceremony in India’s Dharamshala, he emphasized his commitment to serving the Tibetan people and the Buddhist faith.

The ceremony was marked by music, chants, and spiritual rituals as oracles and monks paid tribute. While China claims the authority to appoint his successor, the Dalai Lama reaffirmed that only his Gaden Phodrang Trust holds that right, adding that he would reincarnate outside Chinese control.

His 90th birthday will be celebrated with participation from U.S. diplomats and Indian officials.
