A motion of no confidence against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to be debated on 7 July and voted on 10 July during the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, according to Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea, who submitted the motion.

Piperea believes the vote is likely to fail but says it sends a powerful symbolic message within the European Union.

The motion received 79 supporting signatures and was approved by the Conference of Presidents.

Von der Leyen faces accusations of breaching European Union transparency rules after refusing to disclose text messages exchanged with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite a ruling by the European Court of Justice in favour of a journalist seeking access to the messages, the Commission has yet to release the correspondence.

Piperea has criticised the Commission for applying strict rule of law standards to Eastern European countries while shielding itself from scrutiny.
