The 35-year-old Swiss international made a stunning fingertip stop in the 113th minute, denying Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal a goal that could have forced a penalty shootout. Sommer flung himself high to his left, tipping Yamal’s curling effort wide, reminiscent of Julio Cesar’s famous save against Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou in 2010 during Inter’s treble-winning season.
"It was a special save, one I’ll remember for the rest of my life," a visibly emotional Sommer told reporters after the match. "I’m happy that ball didn’t go in."
Sommer's performance was pivotal as Inter overcame a 3-2 deficit. Goals from Francesco Acerbi and Davide Frattesi sealed the victory in a memorable contest, sending the Nerazzurri to the final with a 7-6 aggregate score. The dramatic win mirrored the events of the first leg in Barcelona, reinforcing Inter's resilience.
Despite often flying under the radar, Sommer's composure and playmaking were on full display. He completed 61 touches, second only to defender Alessandro Bastoni, and made seven critical saves, including several against Yamal.
"He's a fantastic player," Sommer praised the 17-year-old Barcelona forward. "But we managed to come back. A lot of teams would be exhausted after conceding a third goal, but not us."
Known for his mental strength, Sommer maintains focus through yoga and meditation, and after the emotional victory, he planned to unwind at home.
"This one you don't forget," he added with a smile.
Now, Inter Milan will prepare for their first Champions League final since their 2010 triumph under Jose Mourinho, where they will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal, with PSG holding a 1-0 advantage going into the return leg at the Parc des Princes.
