Meta Platforms is set to invest nearly $1 billion in a new data center project in central Wisconsin as part of its broader push into artificial intelligence technology, according to a Bloomberg News report released on Friday.
Earlier this year, Wisconsin reached an agreement with an unnamed company using an alias to develop the data center, with an expected multiyear investment of $837 million. Documents reviewed by Bloomberg confirmed that Meta is behind the project.
Both Meta and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation declined to comment when contacted by Reuters about the report.
The increasing investment in data centers is part of a broader trend where technology giants are ramping up capital expenditures to meet the growing demand for computing power to support generative AI applications, including those like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Meta, for example, has allocated up to $65 billion in 2025 to expand its AI infrastructure, driven by pressures from investors to deliver returns on significant technological investments.
However, analysts have warned that President Donald Trump's new reciprocal tariffs, which affect imported goods, could pose a challenge to Big Tech's multibillion-dollar efforts to expand AI infrastructure in the U.S., potentially undermining one of the administration's key goals.
