Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov discussed progress in the delimitation and demarcation of borders between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the restoration of transport links between the two countries, during a press conference with Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon.
One of the key issues in the negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia is the delimitation and demarcation of borders. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated this during a joint press conference with Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, held in Baku.
The minister noted that the work in this regard is highly appreciated:
“The year 2024 was remarkable in this regard. For the first time, an agreement was reached through negotiations, and the process of freeing four villages in the Gazakh region, which had been under Armenian control since the early 1990s, began,” Bayramov emphasized.
According to him, contacts between the State Commissions continue, and it is expected that this process will continue to progress rapidly in the coming months:
“Azerbaijan generally views this process with optimism,” the minister added.
During his speech, Jeyhun Bayramov also pointed out that the opening of transport links between the two countries is one of the priority issues. He particularly emphasized the importance of ensuring unhindered passage between Azerbaijan's western regions and Nakhchivan:
“This issue has been the subject of intensive negotiations for a long time. Unfortunately, no tangible results have been achieved so far. Armenia has not yet fulfilled its commitment from 2020. Azerbaijan, however, continues to move forward in this direction,” the minister stated.
The Foreign Minister also noted that ensuring the unhindered passage is one of Azerbaijan's key demands:
“This is an obligation that should not be affected by any future changes in Armenian legislation. Such a passage existed during the Soviet era, but it was later violated, and a region with a population of over 300,000 was left under blockade,” Bayramov added.
The minister also emphasized that this issue is of particular importance not only in the context of opening regional communications but also in terms of Azerbaijan's internal unity and national security.
