Hikmet Hajiyev states that Azerbaijan is the author of the peace treaty initiative with Armenia, while highlighting ongoing territorial disputes and the need for constitutional amendments to ensure lasting regional peace.
“The Republic of Azerbaijan is the author of the peace treaty text and initiative between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This initiative was presented to Armenia by Azerbaijan. However, it must be acknowledged that the crimes against humanity and other acts committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan cannot be forgotten. These matters should be considered within the broader context,” said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with journalists at the 12th Global Baku Forum.
Highlighting that Armenia's territorial claims against Azerbaijan persist, Hajiyev added: “As President Ilham Aliyev has highlighted, there are provisions in the Armenian constitution that need to be changed. These changes should lay the groundwork for lasting peace in the region. It should be noted that in interstate relations and conflict resolution, amending the constitution of countries is not unprecedented, and there are several examples in this regard.”
